Traveling with another person always makes for safer
travels, but that may not always be possible.
For starters, you should always keep yourself composed even if you seem to be
lost. When you are unfamiliar with your surroundings, look at a map of the area
before you leave your hotel room. This makes you less noticeable, especially in
high tourist areas.
Another thing to keep in mind is where you carry your cash and wallet. While
traveling, you should only carry a small amount of cash with you and keep your
wallet in your front pocket when at all possible. For those who feel the need
to carry a purse, keep it in a secure place at all times. If you are wearing a
jacket, consider carrying it over your shoulder but under your jacket where it
is less noticeable. When at all possible, take advantage of the safe that may
be in the room you are staying in. Never leave valuables out in the open where
anyone can see.
